Stefan Boonen

Stefan Boonen writes picture books, books for early readers, graphic novels, and novels. He also frequently visits schools and libraries, collaborates on theatrical storytelling projects, and occasionally teaches writing workshops.

For his books, he enjoys collaborating with illustrators such as Melvin, Tom Schoonooghe, Jan Van Lierde, Marja Meijer, Anke Rymenams, Federico Appel, Greet Bosschaert, and others.

Stefan: 'I’m often asked what you need to be able to do or what you need to do to become a writer? First and foremost, a good writer must be curious. Not afraid of bears or kissing or prehistoric times. You have to love coffee and chocolate. It helps if you like jokes and can dance well. You have to be persistent and enjoy working on your own. You have to be able to listen (and keep quiet). Or ask the right questions. It’s essential that you love reading and can take a punch. You have to be able to hold your breath for at least 30 seconds and walk with your hands behind your back. It’s also important that you love language and stories.'
